Tracking East
Apex, NC
Happened to be in Apex for some other business, so I took a few minutes to poke around the stations there.
The town of Apex grew around the first station built there in 1854. The town’s name comes from the station being the highest elevation (499 feet) on Chatham Railroad’s run from Jacksonville, Florida to Richmond, Virginia.
Union Depot is a 1914 station built by Seaboard Airline Railroad and shared by Durham and Southern Railway. The station closed in the 1960s. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. It currently houses the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center.
The CSX freight station across the street is still in use.
